Naked In The Sky

There are few bars as good as this for taking in the Melbourne night air. Look south, and you’ll see a sparkling cityscape; look north, the charming old Fitzroy rooftops.

Naked in the Sky is the rooftop bar above Naked for Satan on busy Brunswick StreetIt’s a well-visited drinking spot in an area where there are plenty of options.

The Naked in the Sky décor is Spanish-themed, but the feature most talked about has to be the wallpaper of vintage magazines, including spreads of sculpted, semi-naked men and women. Think hot bodies lit red by lighting.

‘Bar de Pintxos y Vodka’ we think translates to ‘an excess of vodka and share food’! There’s also a good range of beers and Australian and Spanish wines, and eating inside in the restaurant and outside off the bar menu are equally satisfying. The cheese and walnut deep-fried croquets are heavenly.

The rooftop is accessed via the lift in the next-door apartment block. This is not nearly as arduous as it sounds. You can roll into Naked for Satan and the staff will happily help out. Once on the top floor you can get to the toilets via the main lift to the side of the bar.

The outdoor rooftop terrace circles the space in a horseshoe and has awnings and heating. Best of all, there’s little blocking the views. It’s a glass-walled expanse – the skylines are clear and unobstructed, even from a wheelchair.

The door opening to the outdoor area could be a little lighter to push, but people are passing through all the time, so you’re unlikely to struggle.

The seating is almost entirely at wheelchair-friendly height, although the smoking area has tall bar stools. There are small metal tables with matching folding chairs that look across one of the best views of Melbourne. The furnishing inside consists of baroque-style couches and posh wooden tables, offsetting the exposed brick and corrugated iron.

Dusks envelops the rooftop. Sitting near us are Laine and Amanda, who have just finished a plate of oysters, and are speculating about which spire belongs to which church. We talk about the great places to visit in Melbourne – including the one we are sitting in.

(Thanks Tim and Shay, Laine and Amanda)

Step-free / Accessible Toilet (L2) / Lift

Good: Maybe the best accessible rooftop in Melbourne
Not so: AWC requires using the lift
